The David Marcus Thumbs Up Charity was created in memory of an amazing man, David Marcus.  We, David’s family and friends, felt we needed to keep his name and memory alive, so we began this Charity with its mission to provide scholarships to those high school seniors who exemplify David’s character traits of Positivity and Inspiration on a regular basis.  Our goal is to give out as many scholarships each school year to graduating seniors in any Kern County high school who are enrolled in a college, university, or a technical or trade school for the following school year, who have been recommended by their teachers and/or fellow students and those who exemplify those characteristics that David was known for.
David was well known in Bakersfield.  In addition to being developmentally challenged, and then later in life becoming physically challenged, he visited the special education students in many elementary and junior high schools while he was working for Albertsons, and then began visiting the high schools upon his retirement.  He then became a seven-time cancer survivor until his passing on June 28, 2019.  During those years of struggling with this disease, he continued visiting many high schools.  He made many friends along the way by going to the high school’s football games, basketball games, etc., and the students and families at the games really admired and respected him.  Wherever he would go, everyone would expect to be asked to take his very famous “Thumbs Up” picture together.  David also has a Star on the Fox Theater’s Walk of Fame that was unveiled on September 14, 2019.
